The narrator, Jake Barnes, describes Robert Cohn, who was a middleweight boxing champion in college at Princeton into an old, rich Jewish family, Cohn had an easy childhood. But at Princeton he was made to feel like an outsider because he was Jewish. Kirk Curnutt has done an excellent job creating a general overview of Paris in the s as related to Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway and the Expatriate Modernist Movement is consistently well-written, concise, and easily digestible, replete with illustrations, chronology, literary glossary, biographies, thorough bibliography of important expatriates, and study questions.
Jake is very drunk when he gets back to his room. As he tries and fails to fall asleep, he thinks again about how different things are in the nighttime than during the day. He curses women, and Brett in particular.
